History of Percentage — The Percent Sign

How a Roman tax became the % symbol we all use today.

The idea of calculating in parts of 100 goes back to ancient Rome. Emperor Augustus imposed a centesima rerum venalium — a 1/100 tax on all goods sold at auction. Roman merchants did their math in fractions of 100 because the Roman numeral system didn't handle decimals well.

As trade moved through medieval Italy, merchants in Florence and Venice started writing "per cento" (per hundred) in their ledgers. Over time, scribes shortened it: "p. cento" became "p. 100," then "p.co," and eventually the two zeros merged into the % symbol we recognize today.

The first recorded use of the modern percent sign appeared in a 1425 Italian manuscript. By the 1600s, the symbol had spread across Europe. French and German mathematicians adopted it, and it became the standard way to express a ratio, proportion, or fraction as a value out of 100.

Today, the percent sign is used in every country. It appears in statistics reports, on tax forms, in interest rate disclosures, on nutrition labels, in weather forecasts, and inside every calculator app on every phone. The math hasn't changed since Rome — just the notation.

What Is the Percentage? — How to Find the Percentage of Something

A percentage is a number expressed as a fraction of 100. Here's how to find it for any value.

A percentage is just a ratio with 100 as the base. When you say "40%," you mean 40 out of every 100. It's a fraction (40/100), a decimal (0.40), and a percentage (40%) — all the same value in different forms.

To find the percentage of something, you divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. That's it. If you scored 36 out of 45 on a test, your percentage is (36 ÷ 45) × 100 = 80%.

This formula works for anything: calculating what proportion of your income goes to rent, what fraction of a recipe ingredient you need, or how much of a task is done. The percentage gives you a standard scale — always out of 100 — so you can compare things that have different totals.

How to Find the Percentage of Two Numbers — Cookies! 🍪

The easiest way to understand percentage? Count cookies.

Say you baked 20 cookies. Your friend ate 5 of them. What percentage did your friend eat?

The formula: (Part ÷ Whole) × 100. So: (5 ÷ 20) × 100 = 25%. Your friend ate a quarter of your cookies.

And how many are left? 20 − 5 = 15. That's (15 ÷ 20) × 100 = 75% remaining.

Notice: the two percentages add up to 100%. That always happens when you're splitting a whole into parts. The part and the remainder together make the full 100%.

How to Find the Percentage of a Number — Other Examples

The same formula works everywhere. Here are real-world examples from shopping, finance, and health.

Shopping & Discounts

A jacket costs $120 and it's on sale for 30% off. How much do you save?

Step 1: Find 30% of $120: (30 ÷ 100) × 120 = $36 discount.

Step 2: Subtract from original: $120 − $36 = $84 final price.

Watch out for stacked discounts. A 20% off followed by 10% off is not 30% off. It's 28% off total, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price. The formula: 1 − (1 − 0.20) × (1 − 0.10) = 28%.

Add tax at the end. If sales tax is 8.25%, multiply the final price by 1.0825: $84 × 1.0825 = $90.93.

You invest $10,000 at a 7% annual interest rate, compounded yearly. What do you have after 5 years?

Formula: Final = Principal × (1 + Rate/100)^Years

$10,000 × (1.07)⁵ = $10,000 × 1.4026 = $14,026

That's a 40.26% total growth over 5 years, even though the annual rate is only 7%. Compounding means your interest earns interest. Start early and the effect is dramatic. At 7%, your money doubles roughly every 10 years (the Rule of 72: 72 ÷ 7 ≈ 10.3 years).

Health & Nutrition

A nutrition label says a serving provides 15% of your daily iron. What does that mean?

It means the serving gives you 15 out of every 100 units of your recommended daily iron intake. If the daily recommendation is 18mg, then 15% of 18mg = (15 ÷ 100) × 18 = 2.7mg per serving.

Macro splits work the same way. A balanced diet might be 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein, 30% fat. On a 2,000 calorie diet: 40% × 2,000 = 800 calories from carbs, 30% × 2,000 = 600 from protein, 30% × 2,000 = 600 from fat.

If you scored 432 out of 500, your percentage is (432 ÷ 500) × 100 = 86.4%. Most grading systems map percentages to letter grades: A+ (90–100%), A (80–89%), B+ (70–79%), B (60–69%), C (50–59%), and F (below 50%). The exact cutoffs vary by institution.

Find what percentage one number is of another. Uses the formula: Percentage = (X ÷ Y) × 100.

This is one of the most common percentage questions. You have two numbers and want to know the ratio between them as a percentage.

Formula: Percentage = (X ÷ Y) × 100

Example: What percent of 200 is 40? Answer: (40 ÷ 200) × 100 = 20%.

This formula applies when you know the part and the whole, and want the proportion. It works for test scores (42 out of 50 = 84%), sales targets (85 of 100 units = 85%), or survey results (340 out of 1,000 respondents = 34%).

Reverse the percentage formula to find the original whole when you know the part and the percentage.

Sometimes you know the part and the percentage, but not the whole. This is the reverse percentage problem.

Formula: Whole = X ÷ (P ÷ 100)

Example: 45 is 15% of what number? Answer: 45 ÷ (15 ÷ 100) = 45 ÷ 0.15 = 300.

You'll use this when you know a discount amount and the percentage off, but not the original price. Or when a tax amount is known and you need the pre-tax value. If you paid $36 in tax and the tax rate is 8%, the pre-tax total was $36 ÷ 0.08 = $450.

What Is X Increased/Decreased by P%?

Calculate the new value after a percentage increase or percentage decrease.

To increase a number by a percentage, multiply it by (1 + P/100). To decrease, multiply by (1 − P/100).

Increase formula: New Value = X × (1 + P/100)

Decrease formula: New Value = X × (1 − P/100)

Example (increase): $200 increased by 25% = $200 × 1.25 = $250.

Example (decrease): $200 decreased by 25% = $200 × 0.75 = $150.

A common mistake: people think a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease gets you back to the original. It doesn't. $100 → +50% → $150 → −50% → $75. You lose 25%. Percentage increase and decrease are not symmetric.

The Flip Trick

X% of Y always equals Y% of X. This works because multiplication is commutative: (X/100) × Y = (Y/100) × X. So 8% of 50 = 50% of 8 = 4. Finding 4% of 75? That's 75% of 4 = 3. Much easier.

To estimate doubling time, divide 72 by the interest rate:

  • At 6%: 72 ÷ 6 = 12 years to double
  • At 8%: 72 ÷ 8 = 9 years
  • At 12%: 72 ÷ 12 = 6 years

Works in reverse: if prices doubled in 10 years, inflation was about 72 ÷ 10 = 7.2%.

Use the formula: Percentage = (x ÷ y) × 100. For example, to find what percent 40 is of 200: (40 ÷ 200) × 100 = 20%. So 40 is 20% of 200. This works for any two numbers — just divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100.

How much is 60% of 1260?

60% of 1260 = (60 ÷ 100) × 1260 = 0.60 × 1260 = 756. A quick mental math approach: 10% of 1260 = 126, so 60% = 126 × 6 = 756.

Can percentages be more than 100?

Yes. A percentage over 100 means you have more than the reference amount. If a company's revenue went from $100K to $250K, that's a 150% increase. Investment returns, population growth, and markup percentages regularly exceed 100%. A 200% increase means the value tripled.

Can percentages be averaged?

Only when the groups are the same size. If 80% of 100 students and 60% of 50 students passed, the simple average (70%) is wrong. The correct weighted average: (80 + 30) ÷ 150 = 73.3%. Always weight by group size when averaging percentages from different-sized groups.

Why calculate percent difference?

Percent difference tells you how far apart two values are relative to their average. It's useful when neither value is a clear "before" or "after" — like comparing two lab measurements, two product prices, or two survey results. The formula: |Value1 − Value2| ÷ ((Value1 + Value2) ÷ 2) × 100.
